Inanna International Iraqi dance Festival
Where Tradition Meets Innovation! ♥

Our Festival will take you beyond cultural boundaries to where tradition meets
innovation.
East meets west, ancient Knowledge meets modern fusion.
Freedom in dance and being a unique artist arises from discipline, hard work,
and passion.
In this festival, we build for you a programme that will give you opportunities to
gain more understanding, solid training, and knowledge about Iraqi dance , its
culture and its different dance styles. The roots of Iraqi dance lie in
Mesopotamia (from the Greek, meaning 'the land between the two rivers), where
the ritual dances were essential in Inanna and Ishtar temples. It is almost 5000
years old. Till today, Iraqi dance has some dance styles like Raqs El Kawliya that
are still keeping this ritual and sacred spirit.
We will take you on a dance journey to learn Banat Al Rief dance styles; the
pioneer Kawliya dancers, the Khashaba dance, Basrawi dance, Choobi , Khaleegi
dance. Our program opens the door for Iraqi dance in a fusion style where new
aesthetics and influence of Western creativity are highlighted to lead you to a
new experience in dance and expression.
We would love you to be involved with us in this historical event.

HOW TO ARRIVE?
1. By boat
Ferry lines connect Tallinn with Sweden (Stockholm) and Finland
(Helsinki). During the summer months there is also connection with
Germany (Rostock, via Helsinki). Tallinn-Helsinki is one of the busiest sea
routes in Europe and has daily 20 ferry crossings and nearly 30 different
fast-boat and hydrofoil crossings.
Tallinn – Helsinki (Finland) ferry companies: https://www.tallink.com/
www.eckeroline.fi
http://www.sales.vikingline.com/
From Stockholm (Sweden) to Tallinn (once a day, travel time 1 night =
start in the evening and arrival in the morning) https://www.tallink.com/
There are also lines between Riga (Latvia) and Stockholm (Sweden),
(www.tallink.com) and Klaipeda (Lithuania) and Germany. For example
Kiel (Germany) – Klaipeda (Lithuania)

a-ferries

The fastest and easiest route to arrive to Estonia from Western Europe is
maybe a ride through Denmark and Sweden, and then by overnight ferry
from Stockholm to Tallinn.

2. By road driving through Poland and the other Baltic States (Latvia,
Lithuania) is safe and comfortable. There are lots of petrol stations,
restaurants and hostels/hotels by the road. We recommend to book
accommodation via www.booking.com
for example. It takes one day to ride to Estonia from the border of Poland
and Lithuania. Poland is a really big country, so it takes another day to
ride through Poland. The road from Poland to Estonia is called ”Via
Baltica”, road number E67.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_route_E67
If you have time, you can also ride through Kaliningrad, which belongs to
Russia and where you need a visa, or through Belarus, where you also
need a visa. They are clean and safe countries and for example in Belarus
there are possibly the best roads in the whole Europe! As to Kaliningrad,
many people say that you feel like in Germany there. Belarus tourist

ABOUT ORGANIZERS:

Assala Ibrahim - Assala Ibrahim is an International master dance teacher and choreographer; Iraqi and Egyptian dance.

Based in Switzerland. was born in Basra and grew up in Iraq. From her early childhood she was surrounded by the rich traditions of Iraqi culture and enthralled by Oriental Dance. Her passion for dance grew with her, She struggled to pursue her dreams within a conservative and deeply moral society where traditional viewpoints are firmly entrenched in popular thought and behaviour, and where dance is rejected both as an honourable profession and as a worthy subject for public performance. Even today, there is not a single school of Oriental Dance in the Arab world. Bowing to such pressures, Assala left the University of Baghdad with a degree in Education and returned to Basra to teach in secondary school. In 1993 she had the opportunity to move to Switzerland, where she was at last free to further her studies in Oriental dance and to begin assembling her own researches. She was determined to dance, and to preserve the long and detailed history of her Iraqi dance inheritance.
Traditional and folkloric dances interest her because she believes these are a precious and endangered resource of knowledge and understanding, and the one true path to innovation, creativity, and self-expression in Oriental dance as an art form. She returns again and again to the Middle East both as an eternal and pure source of inspiration, and as a lively, continually replenishing, and endlessly rewarding field of research. She has also complemented her researches with Western academic study of dance methodology and tuition, and with supporting subjects including Pilates, Yoga, and breathing techniques. Her goal is to see the development of proper teaching techniques and similar analytical study in traditional Iraqi and Egyptian folk dance.
Through her many years’ research and fieldwork in Iraqi dance, Assala has been able to analyse, document, reconstruct, and develop dance styles unique to Iraq, including Raqs el Kawliya (Iraqi Romany, or Gypsy dance), Raqs Benat al Rief (rural, or countryside dance), and the southern Iraqi dance styles of Khashaba and Basrawi. She has gained a clear and distinctive understanding of the differences and similarities between these types of dance, and she is the first teacher in the history of Iraqi dance to create a detailed dance terminology, one that is not derived from ballet or Western arts, but deeply rooted in Mesopotamian history and Iraqi culture. Her visionary teaching concept, her unique dance style, and her immense repertoire in Iraqi and Egyptian dance have made her one of the most sought-after dance instructors and performers worldwide. She generously shares her knowledge with her students and is a supportive, kind, and encouraging presence for every one of them.
As a performer Assala has collaborated with many internationally-famous musicians and artists. Highlights of her career so far include tours with two legendary singers - the late Esma Redzepova, Gypsy queen of Macedonia, and the Iraqi Gypsy queen, Sajeda Obied. Since 2003, Assala has been involved with the dance and music project “Beyond Culture” in Switzerland, working with the Ssassa Band. The project works with immigrants, local children, and young people to promote and experience intercultural understanding, respect, integration, dialogue, and joy through music and dance.
Assala Ibrahim is a true ambassador of her native Iraq. Her recipe for success? “I fill my life with dance, and my dance with life.”
